Bridal Updos: Wedding Updos for Long Hair and the 48-Hour Do’s and Don’ts

We’re big on hair that holds. We wash, deep condition, and press hair every day, and the same rule applies to bridal updos in Boca Raton: for the first 24 to 48 hours, don’t wash your hair and don’t keep touching the style. The more you pick, pat, or “just fix one piece, ” the faster pins loosen and frizz shows up, especially in our humidity.
The first 24 to 48 hours: the rules that actually protect your updo
Right after your bridal updo, we generally recommend you treat your hair like it’s “set.” That means you’re protecting the shape, the smoothness, and the pin placement.
48-hour priority: No washing, no steam, and no heavy sweating. Keep hands off the updo so the pins stay exactly where we placed them.
Do this
- Keep your hair dry. If you need to shower, use a shower cap and keep the bathroom ventilation on to cut down steam.
- Hands off. If something feels “off, ” use a mirror and a pin, not your fingers. Fingers add oils and create frizz.
- Use flexible hold only. A light, flexible hairspray is usually enough for flyaways. Skip heavy sprays that make the style stiff and crunchy in photos.
Avoid this
- Saunas, hot yoga, long outdoor workouts, or anything that has sweat running into your hairline.
- Hair oils, shine sprays, and heavy creams on the outside of the updo. They can make pins slide and can show as “wet” spots on camera.
- Constantly re-pinning the same area. If you’re using more than a couple pins, it’s time for a quick check-in.
Boca Raton humidity and wind: keep your bridal bun hairstyle smooth, not puffy
Boca Raton’s hot, humid summers are beautiful, but they’re not gentle on hair updos. Humidity makes hair swell, and that’s when you start seeing soft frizz at the crown, the nape, and around the hairline. If you’re doing photos outside, plan for it.

- Veil and accessory placement: If you’re wearing delicate lace, avoid pinning straight through it. We’ll secure around it so removal doesn’t snag.
- Sun exposure: Limit direct sun right after styling. Heat can soften the shape, especially around the front pieces.

The night after your updo is where most styles get wrecked. You don’t need a complicated routine, but you do need to stop friction and keep your head from rolling directly onto the pins.
Our go-to setup: silk pillowcase (or a loose silk bonnet) plus a gentle scarf if you need extra control around the hairline. If you’re a side sleeper, place one pillow behind your head and one in front to limit turning.
And if you wake up and see a little lift at the crown, don’t panic. Smooth it lightly with a clean, dry hand, then mist flexible spray from a distance. Keep it simple.
If you’re planning “easy updos” for events after the wedding, the same sleep rules apply. Friction is the enemy of smooth styles.
Your wedding-day touch-up kit (small bag, big peace of mind)
We love a polished updo hairstyles for wedding photos, but we also love realistic planning. A tiny kit saves you from running to a bathroom and doing “surgery” on your hair with random pins.
Pack these basics
- Bobby pins that match your hair color (bring more than you think)
- Mini flexible hairspray
- Clear elastics (helpful if a small section loosens)
- Small comb or edge brush
- Hair net (great for buns and tucked styles)
- A few blotting papers for sweat, so you’re not wiping your hairline
If you’re in West Boca near Glades Road and the Town Center area, we also suggest building in a little buffer time. That gives you space for a quick touch-up stop if you need it, without rushing and sweating through your hairline.
When to reach out fast (and when a 2-minute fix is all you need)
Most little issues are easy. A pin shifts. A piece starts to feel slightly loose. That’s normal movement, especially if you’re hugging a lot, dancing, or you’re outdoors in Boca Raton humidity.
